Sundews | Drosera Carnivorous Plant

Sundews | Drosera Carnivorous Plant

1495

Sundews or Drosera, are a carnivorous plant that prefers moist soil and low nutrient bog-like conditions A flypaper trapping mechanism enables them to engage in carnivory. Sundews produce tentacle covered leaves that secrete sticky “dew” droplets to attract and catch bugs.
Once a bug is trapped, the sundew will curl its leaves around it which introduces additional dew to ensure the prey doesn’t escape. This causes more of the leaf surface to come in contact with the bug as the sundew prepares for digestion.

Digestion begins when the sundew releases enzymes and acids to break down the prey into usable nutrients that it absorbs. Only the bug’s exoskeleton remains.

Sundews, like all carnivorous plants, grows best in nutrient poor soil, such as a sand and peat mix. They also need low ph. Do not fertilize these plants, doing so will kill them.
