Water Lettuce plants resemble a head of cabbage and is often referred to as "water cabbage". The foliage of this plant is unique in that it is ribbed and velvety. Lettuce prefers some shade in hotter climates and the leaves will yellow if in direct sun. Like  water hyacinths,  Water Lettuce provides coverage and helps control algae by absorbing nutrients. Water temperatures must be 65 degrees when adding this plant to your water garden. Water lettuce will not tolerate freezing temperatures or cold water. When exposed to cold, the leaves will turn white and rot.
