Hornwort (Ceratophylum demersum)

Hornwort (Ceratophylum demersum)

450

Hornwort is the best plant to help keep algae growth to a minimum and is very winter hardy in the north.  Baby fish love to hide in the dense foliage. This is fast growing, and competes with algae for nutrients. This plant does require some water circulation to perform well. It will not do well in stagnant water. Use one bunch for every 6 square feet of surface area for fish protection and to keep help keep water clear.

All hornwort in the aquatic plant industry is wild harvested in North and Central Florida waterways, this year 2026 there is an incredible drought and water flows are very slow to almost still and nutrient levels very low so the lush green fast growing heads have not been present all spring. The hornwort, when introduced to better conditions in a pond  and usually higher nutrient water, will start growing better.

Hornwort – Hardy Oxygenating Pond Plant for Algae Control

Fast-Growing Submerged Plant That Keeps Water Clear and Protects Fish

Hornwort is one of the best oxygenating pond plants for naturally reducing algae and maintaining clear water. This fast-growing submerged plant competes with algae for nutrients, helping to keep your pond balanced and healthy. Its dense, bushy foliage provides excellent shelter for baby fish and aquatic life, making it ideal for koi ponds and wildlife ponds alike. Hornwort is extremely winter hardy, especially in colder northern climates, and continues to perform season after season. For best results, it requires some water circulation and should not be placed in stagnant water. Use approximately one bunch per 6 square feet of surface area to maximize fish protection and water clarity.
