Water Hawthorn is a deep-water marginal plant. This attractive plant grows from a small bulb and unlike other potted, plant prefers cool water. The dark green leaves are long and narrow and float on the surface. It blooms in the spring when the waters are still cold, and then again in the fall once the water temperatures have fallen. This plant will go dormant during the summer months, so don't accidentally discard it mid-summer, as it is dormant and will begin growing again as the water cools in the fall.  Many areas in the south are not suitable for this plant.

Water Hawthorn – Cool Water Blooming Pond Plant

Unique Spring and Fall Flowering Plant for Cooler Climate Ponds

Water Hawthorn is a unique deep-water marginal plant that thrives in cooler water conditions, making it an excellent choice for ponds in northern climates. Growing from a small bulb, it produces long, narrow dark green leaves that float gracefully on the water’s surface. Unlike most aquatic plants, Water Hawthorn blooms in early spring and again in the fall, providing delicate flowers when few other pond plants are in bloom. During the heat of summer, the plant naturally goes dormant, only to return as temperatures cool—so it’s important not to discard it during this period. Adaptable to full sun through full shade and growing in water depths of 6 to 24 inches, Water Hawthorn spreads 18 to 28 inches and is hardy in zones 3–7, making it a standout seasonal performer for cooler water gardens.
