Water Lettuce plants is often referred to as "water cabbage", as it resembles a head of cabbage. Like water hyacinths, Water Lettuce provides coverage and helps control algae by absorbing nutrients. The foliage of this plant is unique in that it is ribbed and velvety. Lettuce prefers some shade in hotter climates and the leaves will yellow if in direct sun. Water temperatures must be 65 degrees when adding this plant to your water garden. Water lettuce will not tolerate freezing temperatures or cold water. When exposed to cold, the leaves will turn white and rot.

Water Lettuce – Floating Pond Plant for Shade & Algae Control
Soft, Velvety Floating Plant That Helps Keep Pond Water Clear
Water Lettuce, often called “water cabbage,” is a popular floating pond plant known for its rosette shape and soft, velvety, ribbed leaves. Similar to water hyacinth, it provides excellent surface coverage, helping to shade the water, reduce algae growth, and absorb excess nutrients for a healthier pond ecosystem. Water lettuce thrives in warm conditions and should be added when water temperatures reach at least 65°F. In hotter climates, it prefers partial shade, as intense direct sunlight can cause the leaves to yellow. This plant is not cold hardy and will not survive freezing temperatures—exposure to cold water can cause the foliage to turn white and decay—making it ideal as a seasonal addition to your water garden.
