Frogbit | Limnobium spongia

Frogbit | Limnobium spongia

525

American Frogbit has green heart shaped leaves that float on the waters surface.  At first the plants might tip over when first put into the pond. It takes about two weeks for it to send out the runners, but then it spreads like crazy and you have a really nice floating plant.  If Frogbit roots into soil in the bog areas of the pond, it will grow upright as a marginal plant. It can survive winters in zone 6 by sinking dormant buds (turions) to the bottom, but thrives best as a perennial in warmer zones. It is important to note that Limnobium spongia should not be confused with the non-native Limnobium laevigatum (Amazon Frogbit), which is less cold-hardy.

If you live in an area that has extremely hot summers, Large Leaf Giant Sensitive is a better choice than Frogbit. Now Illegal to ship into CA, OR, PR and WA.

THIS PLANT CANNOT BE SHIPPED TO CALIFORNIA, OREGON, WASHINGTON or PUERTO RICO.

Hardiness Zones: 6-10
Light Requirements: Part Shade
Height: 3-8 inches when touching soil or in clustered shallow water

Frogbit – Floating Pond Plant with Heart-Shaped Leaves

Fast-Spreading Surface Plant for Shade and Natural Pond Coverage

Frogbit is a subtropical floating pond plant known for its attractive green, heart-shaped leaves that rest gently on the water’s surface. When first introduced, plants may temporarily tip as they adjust, but within a couple of weeks they begin sending out runners and quickly spread, creating lush surface coverage. Frogbit provides shade, helping to reduce algae growth and protect fish. In shallow bog areas, it can root into soil and grow upright as a marginal plant, adding versatility to your pond design. Best suited for moderate climates, Frogbit may struggle in extremely hot conditions—where alternatives like Large Leaf Giant Sensitive are recommended. Please note: due to regulations, Frogbit cannot be shipped to certain states and territories.
